American Skeet became popular in the early 1900s and was originally developed to improve hunting in the field. The first National Skeet Championships were held in 1926 and the National Skeet Shooting Association (NSSA) was formed in 1928.
An American Skeet field consists of eight stations and two trap houses. A single round consists of 25 targets, with 17 shot as singles and 8 as doubles. Competitors shoot in squads of five shooters, with the squad moving from station to station. Doubles Skeet is a variation of American Skeet, in which doubles are shot at every station.
NSSA is the largest skeet shooting organization and is recognized as the governing body for the sport. You can learn more about the history of American Skeet here, and more about the game here.
